The World Remembers. Pfizer Called Out For Unapproved Drug Test On Children In 1996

With the increasing number of deaths in Kano State, a Twitter user has decided to surface an incident of 1996 between world pharmaceutical giants, Pfizer and the children of Kano.

In 1996, Pfizer selected 200 children to conduct an experimental drug trial. About a 100 of these children were given an untested oral drug. It was reported that the researchers did not obtain science consent form before administering the drug and more so, the parents of the children were also unaware of usage of an untested drug.

11 of these children died and the others had deformities, both physical and mental.

Details of the case surfaced in 2000 in an investigative series of the Washington Post and in the year 2007 Nigeria brought a civil and criminal charge against the company in a multibillion-dollar law suit.

It was reported in 2009 that Pfizer hired investigators to uncover corruption links to the Federal Attorney General, Michael Aondoakaa to expose him and put pressure on him to drop the federal case.

A few months later, Nigeria settled with Pfizer for just $75million dollars.

The twitter user in his post calls Pfizer out stating that they will never forget the damage done to children.

A video on Instagram by user @delemomoduovation further explains the incident on the test and the law suit.
