Obaseki’s Chief of Staff resigns, gov appoints replacement

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has approved the appointment of Osaze Uzamere as his Chief of Staff.

This came barely 24 hours after Mr Taiwo Akerele, the immediate former COS resigned his appointment on Saturday.

In a statement, Secretary to the State Government, Osarodion Ogie, said Uzamere’s appointment took immediate effect.

The 38-year-old investment banker is a graduate of Stony Brook University, New York, where he majored in Computer and Electrical Engineering. He has had stints with Lehman Brothers and South Grade Engineering, among others.

However, there was tension in Benin on Saturday as Akerele formerly tendered his letter of resignation to Obaseki.

Akerele, who cited administrative and governance reasons, had said, “I will like to be given the opportunity to go private as I part ways administratively with the government based on principles.”

But his resignation appeared not to have gone down well with the governor who, government sources, said had not approved Akerele’s exit from his government.

Obaseki’s Special Adviser on Media and Communication Strategy, Mr Crusoe Osagie, had said his boss had yet to receive any official communication of Akerele’s resignation.

In a recent interview with journalists in Benin, Akerele insisted that the crisis between Obaseki and the National Chairman, All Progressives Congress, Adams Oshiomhole, was resolvable.

Investigation showed that some top members of Obaseki’s cabinet were not comfortable with Akerele’s resignation as they felt they could deliver the state for Obaseki without Oshiomhole.

However, the political game changed immediately the Appeal Court in Abuja quashed the Oshiomhole’s suspension as the party’s chairman.
