Palpable Tension As Ondo And Other South-West Governors Meet Controversial Herders Leadership Over Vacation Ultimatum

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu

Akure, the Ondo State capital, is in uneasy calm on Monday morning as Governor Rotimi Akeredolu plays host to South West Governors and the leadership of the controversial herders, Miyetti Allah. The topic of discussion is none other than the 7-day vacation order issued by Governor Akeredolu to herders in Ondo State to vacate the state’s forest reserves.

Recall last week that Governor Rotimi Akeredolu ruffled feathers in the Presidency, and other high places, when he issued a week’s ultimatum that cattle rearers should pack up and exit Ondo’s forest reserves or face dire consequences at the expiration on Monday January 25th, 2021. The trouble stemmed from the body language of the controversial herders leadership, Miyetti Allah, who aren’t ready to move an inch in obedience of the vacation order issued by the governor. The same leadership has been accused of always encouraging their members to graze their cattle without impunity. They are in constant squabbles with farmers all over the nation over constant destruction of crops and farmland.

The vacation ultimatum cannot be disconnected from the unstable state of insecurity in the South-West state’s forests which has served as killing fields and kidnapping headquarters, with herders being fingered as the shadow culprits by recently rescued or ransomed victims.

Security crisis had for a while been brewing in the woodlands and highways of Ondo and other states in the South-West, where herders have been alleged to be the kingpins of kidnap-for-ransom of travelers. This is beside the issue of incessant clashes with farming communities, who allege herders openly graze their cattle because they enjoy protection from prosecution by shadowy figures in the presidency.

The security impasse which in recent times had assumed an ethnic-tribal dimension in the South-West region, came to a head last Friday, 22nd of January 2021, when a herders-farmers clash descended into an orgy of violence in the Ibarapa area of Oyo State. The community resorted to self-help under the leadership of a self-styled tribal leader (the controversial Sunday Igboho), to violent rout the cattle herders out of their land after the expiration of vacation orders of their own. An unconfirmed number of lives were lost, and property worth millions of Naira were torched.

Determined to avoid further rancour, bloodshed and restore normalcy, the governors of the South-West region, Mr Akeredolu (Ondo), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Gboyega Oyetola (Osun) and Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), have decided to have showdown talks with representatives of the Miyetti Allah, to find peaceful resolutions on pertinent security issues.

Fingers are crossed and the general populace wait with bated breath at the outcome of the meeting, where it is hoped policy will be formulated put an end to the practice of open grazing, and security will be restored to the South-West’s farming communities and highways. What do you think would be the outcome of this tug-of-war between the governor and the Cattle Rearers’ representatives?

Lagos Makes Audacious Plans To Vaccinate As Much As 50% To Develop Covid-19 Herd Immunity As Governor Contacts Covid-19 Vaccine Manufacturers

The Lagos State government is making bold plans to combat Covid-19 by ensuring its citizens develop herd immunity to the dreaded pandemic. One of the ways of achieving this, the Lagos Governor revealed would be by herd immunity, that is, the vaccination of at least 50 per cent of her residents. We’re talking about half of at least 20 million people living in Lagos (Gulp!).

Herd immunity is a form of indirect protection from infectious diseases, like the Covid-19 pandemic, when a sufficient percentage of a population has become immune to the infection, either through vaccinations or previous infections. Lagos has recorded about 45,000 Covid-19 infections, that is over 37% of the 121,000 Covid cases recorded in the country since February 2020.

Governor Sanwo-Olu made the disclosure on a night-time television program, Sunday Politics, where he said the government planned to vaccinate as much as 50 per cent of the population of Lagos to reach his goal of protecting the city. conversations with some of the vaccine manufacturers . He said he made contacts with representatives of leading Covid-19 vaccines manufacturers like Pfizer , Oxford –AstraZeneca , Johnson & Johnson , Moderna.

He further stated the organised private sector has given him the assurance of financial support toward the audacious purchase of the vaccines needed to reach the goal. This planned vaccination purchase is besides the ones in the Federal Government’s pipeline.

While this audacious move is very commendable, do you think Lagos State government can successfully pull this off and flatten the rising Covid-19 curve? Would you take the jab? If no, why not?

Jungle Justice As Suspected Killers Of Taraba LGA Chairman Got Hacked To Death By Angry Mob

Barely hours after the reported killing of a kidnapped council chairman and his nephew in Taraba State, an angry mob has reportedly descended on his suspected killers and exacted their own brand of jungle justice on them.

Salihu Dovo, the chairman of Ardo-Kola Local Government Area in Taraba state, who was kidnapped in the early hours of Sunday from his Jalingo home, alongside his 25-year-old nephew, was reportedly found dead later in the dead.

As soon as news of his death filtered into Nahuta and Ardo-Kola communities, two persons who were accosted with AK-47 rifles in the Ardo-Kola village were hacked to death by angry youth who were trying to prevent the suspects from escaping.

Spokesman of Taraba Command DSP David Misal, confirmed the incident and said three suspects were arrested in connection with the killing of the council chairman. He also confirmed the police retrieved the corpses of the two suspects who fell to jungle justice at the Ardo-Kola village and had deposited them in the Federal Medical Centre mortuary, Jalingo, the State capital.

While jungle justice is totally condemnable and no one should be taking the laws into their own hands, what do you think the angry youth of the Ardo-Kola community should have done better to prevent the suspects from escaping instead of lynching them?

15 Sailors On Turkish Freighter Kidnapped By Daredevil Sea Pirates Off Nigeria’s Coast

News gathered from international news agency, Reuters, has it that 15 sailors aboard a Turkish freighter have been abducted by daredevil, gun-toting sea pirates off Nigeria’s coastal waters.

The Turkish container ship which came under coordinated attack in the hands of the violent pirates at the Gulf of Guinea on Saturday night, had its protective citadel breached with explosives. One fatality, an Azerbaijani sailor, was recorded in the attack.

Information from Turkish media stated an Istanbul based firm, the Bowden company, as the owner and operators of the vessel. The vessel named Mozart, was headed to Cape Town from Lagos when the brazen attack took place 160 kilometres (100 miles) off Sao Tome island.

Though Turkey’s foreign ministry said the pirates had not made any contact, the attack got the attention of the Turkish President, Tayyip Erdogan, who reportedly said on Sunday he was making arrangements to rescue the kidnapped personnel of the Turkish ship.

Pirates in the Gulf of Guinea, which has about a dozen countries surrounding it, has recorded 22 incidents in which 130 sailors have been snatched in the last one year alone.

The question is should Nigeria be solely responsible for the spate of pirate kidnappings off her international coasts or should is a joint-responsibility of all nations surrounding the waters?

Plane With Banner Bearing ” ‘Trump: Worst President Ever’ ” Spotted Flying Over Florida In Obvious Trump Taunt

Oh! how have the mighty fallen…You might not want to look at this if you’re a fan of former US President, Donald Trump, because you won’t find this funny like the rest of the world. Reports from TMZ, gossip peddlers of international repute, has it that a plane was seen flying over Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday with messages meant for the erstwhile strongman.

Unless you’re living under a rock, you’ll know that President Trump, who changed his residency from New York to Florida in November 2019, relocated to the sunny everglades of Florida State when he left the White House officially last Wednesday, when he chose to take no part in #46’s inauguration.

If Trump thought he was relocating to Florida for nice retirement and a time of his life, he’s totally wrong as residents reportedly “silently walked out” of the community for him, in obvious protest. As if that wasn’t enough, someone now paid for a plane prank to have him seeing something he wouldn’t ever love when looks in the skies. It’s pouring abuses for the embattled former President as his impending impeachment trial awaits him in the cooler in Washington DC.

One thing is certain, not everybody in Florida wants Donald Trump in their sunny paradise and someone is deeply invested in making him suffer for moving down South instead of going back home to New York.
